Product DetailsScott Joplin repeatedly emphasised that ragtime should never be played fast.  Antoinette is given the speed “Tempo di Marcia”.  This does NOT mean 160 paces per minute nor even 120 paces.  A gentle stroll, or even a “geriatric march” of 95 paces to the minute is much more sensible.  Any faster and the delicate melodies start feeling breathless and hurried - much slower and the music loses its swing.  The composer has also written a tricky, but interesting, bass line in Antoinette, carried on the Tenor and Baritone parts.  Do give them a chance. Remember that 6/8 rhythm is 2 beats to the bar - NOT 6 beats to the bar. Antoinette can be played by any number of instruments from Duet upwards. For Duet;  one Melody part and one Bass part or Tenor part must be used. For Trios;  experiment with combinations. One Melody part plus one Tenor part or Baritone or Bass part is essential. For Quartets and larger groups, cover Melody, Tenor and Bass plus Harmony 1.  Add Harmony 2 and 3 parts if the instruments are available, but do make sure that the melody is strong enough to be heard without playing too loudly. If available, add additional Bass parts for a fuller sound.  For example, if you have two or more bassoonists, have one on each of the bass parts (Tenor, Baritone, Bass). For Antoinette to work correctly in ensemble, at least one Tenor, Baritone or Bass part must be present.
